Bracha Bdil (1988), is an Israeli-British composer, conductor, and pianist, winner of the Prime Minister's Award for Composition (Israel, 2022) and the ACUM Award (2019). Her repertoire spans different mediums including orchestral music, chamber, vocal and electronic music.
Bracha has a B.Ed. in Music Education from Levinsky College and a Master's Degree in Music Education and Composition from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, led by Professor Andre Hajdu, o.b.m. and Professor Haim Permont. Throughout her education Bracha studied classical piano with Dina Orlov and Dr. Irena Berkowitz, jazz with Marina Lewinsky, and piano chamber music with Professor Alexander Tamir o.b.m. Furthermore, Bracha studied classical singing with Hadassah Ben-Haim and conducting with Elli Jaffe and Evgeny Tzirlin.
Bracha's compositions have won several first prizes, among them: International Composition Competition named after A.G. Schnittke; George Ștephănescu International Composition Competition, Romania (2024); Symphony Kyoto, County Hall Arts competition, UK-Japan (2023); MaestrosVision Awards International Composition Competition, China (2022); The International Symphony Orchestra Composition Contest named after Michal Kleofas Oginski, Molodechno, Belarus; The Electo Silva International Choir Festival, Santiago de Cuba; Donne In Musica XVIII Composition Competition, Belgrade; the VIII and the IX International Piano & Composition Competition, ULJUS, Smederevo, Serbia (2021); the Wolf Durmashkin Composition Award, Germany (2018) and the Yardena Alotin Composition Competition, Bar-Ilan University, Israel (2016).
Bracha's composition Yizkerem (May Our Lord Remember Them), for a cappella choir, represented Israel at the Asian Composers League Festival, Taiwan (2018). Yizkerem was also awarded a prize in the III International Composer Competition “New Music Generation", Kazakhstan (2021) and in the International Choral Writing Competition named after A.D Kastalsky – Moscow (2018).
In 2024, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra
commissioned from Bdil a new composition; "Fanfare of Hope," which
deals with the "Iron Swords" war, combines quotes from songs of
Israel's wars alongside songs of the homeland. The composition was premiered at
the Tel Aviv Culture Center Hall conducted by Lahav Shani and received
enthusiastic responses. In the same year, the Staatstheater in Darmstadt
commissioned from Bdil a work for the 80th International Holocaust Remembrance
Day; "Letters to Fred" – a song cycle for soprano and piano –
describes the experiences of a Jewish-German boy who was saved in a
Kindertransport but whose family perished in the Holocaust. The cycle was
written for the spinto soprano Megan Marie Hart and was premiered by her in
Darmstadt with pianist Giacomo Marignani.
Bracha Bdil is a member of the Israel Composers'
League, her works are broadcast on the Israel Radio Voice of Music program and
published by the Israel Music Institute and ICL.
Bracha has been a lecturer for the faculty of music at
the Levinsky College of Music Education, the Jerusalem College, and at the Ron
Shulamit Conservatory, she has also worked as a pianist in dance classes at the Wingate College and in theater
performances. Beginning in the fall of 2018, Bracha became the artistic director
and chief conductor of the Zmora
Women's Orchestra in Jerusalem.
